Should I Buy Biotene Mouthwash for Dry Mouth?

Summary: Biotene Mouthwash is a product I’ve had a couple of patients try and have gotten good feedback from. It contains salivary enzymes that bolster natural protection in your mouth, it’s alcohol-free, is inexpensive and has few side effects.

Dear Curtis: It seems like when I wake up in the morning my mouth is very dry. Way more so than what I remember even 5 years ago. I’d like to see if there are any products that might be able to help with this. I’ve heard good things from one friend who said Biotene mouthwash helped her. What do you think of it?

If I’m understanding your situation correctly, the dry mouth tends to show up in the morning after sleeping? If so, Biotene may be a product you want to try. But, let’s cover a couple other bases first.

Causes of Dry Mouth

Dry mouth can be caused by a number of different things. For example, some people are just ‘mouth breathers’. So rather than being able to comfortably breath through their nose they are breathing through their mouth all night and drying it out.

To my knowledge, there is no product that will help that kind of dry mouth.

You can also get dry mouth from certain medications, diabetes, cancer and even as you age. Understand, that in certain instances an oral rinse like Biotene may not do the trick and there could be something more serious going on.

However, I think trying Biotene may be a good first step.

Salivary Enzymes

What’s unique about Biotene is that it addresses one of the root causes (excuse the pun) of the problem by providing your mouth with salivary enzymes which keeps your mouth moist.

This is important because if your mouth isn’t kept moist like it is suppose to you can get more dental problems like cavities.

The other thing about Biotene that is nice is that it is alcohol-free.

Frankly, it’s not that expensive either. You can buy a nice size bottle of Biotene for at (or under) $10 a bottle. Additionally, you’re unlikely to experience any side effects from it. Any prescription drugs that your doctor might want you to try are likely going to have wide ranging effects in your body. Some of which, you may not care much for.

At the end of the day, I think Biotene is a good, fairly priced mouthwash that you may want to try.
